In the video hall of the Virtual Museum of Contemporary African Art we created space to introduce artists through moving images. As a start we selected 4 South Africans. They are portrayed by curator Susan Glanville.
She produced in 1999 an extra ordinary series of ten concise portraits of South African artists titled Seeing Ourselves. This successful series was to be followed by another ten.The artist is followed on location and in his/her studio and in just 6 minutes the thrust and character of the work is shown and explained by the artist. This series is geared to create awareness around local contemporary art practice, a familiarity with key South African artists and an understanding of how images function within a broader social context.
The 4 South African videos are distributed by Film Resource Unit in Johannesburg.
In april 2008 Victor Ekpuk made the mural Amsterdam Central at the launch of the new ZAM Africa Magazine. The performance has been filmed.
