MASOUD KIPANYA - biography


Ali Masoud, nicknamed 'Masoud Kipanya' after his popular character the mouse (in Swahili: kipanya) was born on 23rd June 1972 in Dar es Salaam. He started his career as an artist in primary school. His first work was published by Heko magazine in 1989. He has worked as a cartoon editor for Sanifu cartoon newspaper, and is currently the chief editorial cartoonist for the daily Majira newspaper.

He has participated in several exhibitions in Tanzania and in South Africa, where he has worked as a painter. He is also a presenter at Dar es Salaam's popular radio station Clouds Radio.

Masoud has won several awards, including the first prize in the East African cartoon and caricature competition organized by the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung which won him a study trip to Tanzania. In 1999 he made a 2-week visit to Japan in an international cultural exchange program by the Japan Foundation.



Masoud Kipanya's illustrations have appeared in BBC Focus on Africa magazine and in a series of children's books for the Tanzania Children's Book project. His cartoons appeared in the collection 'Art in Politics - sanaa katika siasa' published by the Friedrich Ebert Stifting Tanzania in 2000.
