THABIT MAIGA - biography

Thabit Maiga was born 22 years ago in Iramba district in Singida region (Tanzania). He started his education at Mwananyamala B primary school in Dar es Salaam in 1994. Before continuing with his secondary education in 1995, Maiga had the opportunity to undertake a six-months course in comic illustration, traditional dancing and related training organised by the National Arts Council [BASATA].

A month after completing his Fine Art course at the BASATA College in Dar es Salaam, Maiga joined the Chuo cha Upadri located in Buguruni, Dar es Salaam where he undertook a seven-months course on Fine Art specifically known as LDV Arts Class. During his time at that College, he participated in various competitions such as cartoon drawing from a story. The contest was organised by Tanzania Gender Networking Programme (TGNP) in January 1997. Maiga was graded in the Top Ten successful contestants in the competition.

Currently, Maiga is working as a freelance cartoonist, with a four years of experience under his belt. He has attended various seminars for cartoonists and other artists whose principal objective is to educate society on AIDS and other societal maladies through cartoons.

In 1999, Maiga joined Business Times Limited as a cartoonist for its publications Sanifu, Dar Leo, and Majira. During this period, Maiga participated in drawing posters and banners for UNFPA at for which he was awarded Tsh100,000 ($107.5) and a Certificate as the third-placed winner. The presentation was officiated by the l vice-president of Tanzania at the time (mid-1996), the late Dr. Omar Ali Juma.

In January 2001, Maiga participated in a cartoonists exhibition which was held at the Nyerere Cultural Centre in Dar es Salaam, which was formerly known as Nyumba ya Sanaa.
