About PACT

The Popular Association of Cartoonists in Tanzania (PACT) started out around 1998, while its official foundation took place on September 26, 2000. Its main aim is to promote Tanzanian cartoonists and the use of their cartoons. The idea came from Sammy Makilla, a Tanzanian cartoon fan. Most of today's popular cartoonists have joined PACT.

Some of its accomplishments are a training for secondary school pupils on cartoon drawing, an educational exhibition on the Tanzanian Population and Housing Census and a training for cartoonists on media law and ethics. PACT also organizes an annual cartoon exhibition on World Press Freedom Day, which in 2002 was hosted on the wall outside the general post office in Dar es Salaam, and in 2003 in the Russian Cultural Center.
